Work, Gym, a Weekend Away: What Women Really Look For in a Travel Backpack

A woman walking a leafy path wearing the emmèton Metro 20L anti-theft backpack in sage green, an umbrella in the side pocket

It has to look good and feel good. It also has to work as hard as I do.

On a normal weekday my bag leaves the house with a laptop and charger, my personal things, and my gym gear for the session on the way home. Three separate lives, one backpack. For a long time I assumed that was just me being disorganised. Then I started paying attention to the women buying bags from us, and to why they chose the ones they did. It turns out almost everyone is carrying some version of the same day.

So if you're looking for the best travel backpack for women, this isn't a list written from a spec sheet. It's what I've learned from carrying my own day, and from seeing what other women look for when they choose theirs.

What I carry, and the bag I carry it in

I use the Metro 20L in Sage for work, and it's the bag I reach for even on days I don't strictly need one. The laptop lives in its own padded compartment, so it never touches anything else. My personal things go in the main section. The gym gear fits because the side straps let the bag out when I need more room and pull it back in on lighter days, so it doesn't look like I'm heading off on a hike.

It isn't the most technical bag we carry. It's the one that suits the shape of my day, and that turns out to be what most women are really shopping for.

What women keep telling us matters

When I look at what women have bought from us and listen to why, it's never one thing. Looks and feel matter, of course, but so does how the bag actually works, and nobody wants to trade one for the other. Within that, the same four things come up again and again, and they're a pretty good definition of a great backpack for women.

Comfort on the shoulders, first and always. This is the one nobody compromises on. A bag can tick every other box, and if it digs in or drags by the afternoon, it gets left at home. What women describe wanting is a bag that sits close and moves with you, so it feels like part of you rather than something you're hauling around. Padded straps help, but how close the bag sits to your back matters just as much. (Our piece on why a backpack's straps matter more than its looks explains why.)

Enough space for a whole day, not just a commute. Most of us aren't carrying a laptop and nothing else. There's lunch, a water bottle, a jumper, and for a lot of women, gym clothes and shoes. A bag sized only for work ends up with a second tote hanging off your shoulder, which defeats the point of a backpack.

Compartments that keep work and life apart. This one surprised me with how often it comes up. Even when work is the reason for the bag, women still want their personal things kept separate: phone, keys, wallet, makeup, the things you reach for twenty times a day. Nobody wants to dig past a laptop charger to find lip balm, or put a damp gym towel anywhere near their work. A separate laptop compartment and proper internal pockets aren't a nice extra. They're the reason the bag works.

Weight, once it's all packed. A laptop, a day's essentials and gym gear add up quickly, so every gram the bag weighs empty matters more than people expect. You feel the difference between a light bag and a heavy one by mid-afternoon. A lightweight backpack leaves room for your actual day.

Two more things come up often enough to mention. Colour: lots of women want something softer than black, like a sage or a beige that works with what they wear to the office and on the weekend. And security they don't have to think about, which is where a good anti-theft backpack earns its place, especially for women who travel or commute on their own: a hidden pocket for the phone and a main zip that doesn't open with a casual tug on a crowded train. We've written more about which anti-theft features actually matter.

The best backpack is the one that carries your whole day and still feels like part of you at the end of it.

Why a good work bag makes the best travel backpack

Here's the part I didn't expect. A bag that handles a full weekday is also a very good travel backpack. The things that matter on a Tuesday, comfort, space, separation and weight, are exactly what matter on a weekend away. The laptop compartment holds your documents and tablet, the main section takes clothes, and the bag that carries your gym gear carries a weekend's worth just as easily. Qantas and Virgin both take a cabin bag up to 56 × 36 × 23 cm, so a 20-litre backpack goes straight on. Our carry-on guide has the rules for each airline, including Jetstar's change in February.

If the Metro isn't quite you

Every day is a slightly different shape, so here's where I'd point other women, based on what I've seen them choose.

More room and more colour: Roam 23L. A little bigger than the Metro, with the main zip against your back and an RFID-shielded card pocket. It comes in Beige, Rust Red, Grey Green and Black. The straps tuck away so you can carry it by the handle into a meeting.

The lightest on your shoulders: Tempo 18L. Under 600 grams empty. If you want a lightweight backpack for travel, or a small travel backpack for lighter trips, this is it. It has a magnetic locking zip and a sleeve for a slim laptop or iPad, and it comes in Sage or Black. It's simpler inside, which is part of why it's so light.

Slim for the office: Urban 17.5L. At 0.7 kg, it's our lightest laptop backpack, with proper organisation and two hidden pockets. The Bronze is beautiful in person. It's built for work days rather than gym days.

A week away, carry-on only: Transit 26L. The biggest of the backpacks. It's carry-on sized for Qantas and Virgin, with lockable zips and a trolley sleeve. Black only.

For your hands-free bits: Urban 4.5L Sling. Phone, keys, cards and sunnies across your body while the backpack carries everything else. It's handy at the gym and when you travel.
