How wide does it open? It's a semi-clamshell. Lay it on its back and the front opens to around 90 degrees, so you can see the whole compartment and place things in flat. It doesn't lie fully open like a suitcase, but it opens far enough that you're never digging down a hole.

Does it hold its shape? Yes. There's real structure in it, so it keeps its form with things inside and what you pack stays where you put it. It won't stand bolt upright on its own when it's empty, but loaded it holds a clean shape on your back.

How much does 17.5L actually hold? More than the slim profile suggests. Because the shape is squared off and the front opens wide, you can use the full depth rather than losing it to a tapered top. How are the straps for a full day? Good. The shoulder straps are noticeably wide and padded, which spreads the weight rather than cutting a line into your shoulder, and the cross strap keeps them set where you want them. The back panel is ventilated mesh, so it isn't sitting flat against your shirt.

Is it water-resistant? Yes. 420D water-washed nylon with water-resistant zips, so a shower on the walk from the station won't reach the laptop. It isn't waterproof and shouldn't be treated as such.
