Will it fit as carry-on? Partly. At 50 × 29 × 25 cm it sits inside the usual Australian domestic allowance of 56 × 36 × 23 on length and width, and about 2 cm over on depth. Because the bag is soft it presses down into a sizer in a way a hardshell can't, so in practice it usually goes through, but a strict gate check is a strict gate check. Is it structured or soft? Soft, by design. It takes the form of what you put in it, so it packs around boots, a rolled towel or an awkward parcel instead of forcing everything into a box. Does it take a laptop? Yes, though not in a dedicated sleeve, because there isn't one. A laptop in its own padded sleeve travels perfectly well in the main compartment alongside everything else. If you want a padded sleeve built against the back panel, that's the Flow 22.5L or the Commuter 20L.

Can I padlock the zips? No. The pulls aren't shaped to take a padlock. The security on this bag works differently, and without anything to thread, unthread and lose.

So how do the zips hold shut? Elastic crossover bands hold the two main pulls together. Someone can take hold of a hanging tag and still not run the zip open. The front compartment works differently again: its pull slides over a raised moulded catch that holds it firmly in place.

What's the zip across the front for? It's a weatherproof compartment running along the front panel. Phone, wallet, passport, tickets, anything you'd rather not have get wet in a shower.

Is the shoe compartment vented? No. It's sealed rather than vented, so it keeps damp and grit off your clothes rather than letting air through. It sits at one end of the bag and takes a pair of shoes.

Does it work with a suitcase? Yes. A sleeve on the back slides over a trolley handle, so the duffle rides on the case through the terminal instead of on your shoulder.

Can it be worn as a backpack? Yes. Padded straps spread the load across both shoulders, and the duffle handles stay usable either way, so you can switch without unpacking.

Water-resistant or waterproof? Water-resistant. The waxed polyester shell sheds light rain and splashes. It isn't designed to be submerged or worn through a downpour.

How much does 36L actually hold? A four-day kit. Shoes in their own compartment, a change of clothes, a towel, toiletries and a packing cube, with enough room left to close it properly rather than sit on it.

Is it tough enough for the gym every day? Yes. Waxed polyester takes a locker-room floor and the back of a car without showing it, and it wipes clean with a damp cloth.

How is it different from the Flex 27L? The Flex holds its shape and converts three ways, so it's the one for structure. The Session is bigger, softer and built around the shoe compartment, so it's the one for packing around whatever you're carrying.
